Community InvolvementOur first year as a team, very few people in White Bear Lake knew that we had a robotics team, let alone what it was all about. Since then, every year our team has grown not only in members, but also as a part of the community. We have spread awareness of FIRST through demonstrations at schools, parades, school board meetings, and the Minnesota State Fair. To promote students to join our FIRST Robotics team and to get students excited about science and technology, we bring the robot to our school's pep fests and talk to 8th graders at the High School activity fair. However, we don't only focus on high school age students. The majority of our visits have actually been to elementary schools. We have participated in science fairs by showing current robots and volunteering as judges, attended a Boy Scout meeting, and we have even brought our robot from the 2008 season to visit a second grade class that had watched part of the live feed of the Lunacy competition. We believe that it is important to encourage and inform students of all ages about robotics, and to show them how science and engineering can be exciting and fun.
